Best AEO Tools

Eighteen months ago, most marketing teams had never heard of Answer Engine Optimization. The term existed, but only in a handful of blog posts and a few early-stage pitch decks.

Fast forward to May 2026. HubSpot has an AEO product. Semrush added an AEO dashboard. Impact.com made a strategic investment in an AEO startup. And we now track 17+ purpose-built tools on this site, with more launching every quarter.

AEO went from "maybe this matters" to "we need a budget for this" faster than anyone predicted.

This post is a market overview, not a tool ranking. If you want head-to-head comparisons, check the full comparison page. What follows is a map of where the market stands today, who's building what, and what comes next.

The Market by the Numbers

Here's what we're looking at in mid-2026:

Search demand is real. "Answer engine optimization" pulls 3,700 monthly searches in the US alone (11,000 globally). "Generative engine optimization" gets 11,000 US searches. Combined with related terms like "AEO tools" and "AI search optimization," the category sees 25,000+ monthly US searches. Two years ago, these numbers were basically zero.

The money is flowing. We count $75M+ in funding raised by purpose-built AEO companies:

Company Funding Round Date
Evertune $19M total $4M seed + $15M Series A (Felicis) Oct 2024, Aug 2025
Profound $20M Series A June 2026
Peec €7M Seed 2024
Scrunch $4M Seed 2025
AthenaHQ $2.7M Pre-seed + Seed (YC, FCVC) Feb-Jun 2025
PromptWatch $1.2M Seed Sept 2025

This doesn't count Writesonic's $20M+ (GEO is one product within their broader platform), Semrush's massive war chest, or whatever HubSpot paid for XFunnel.

The pricing spread is enormous. You can get started with Otterly at $49/month or Vaylis at €49/month. Semrush AEO starts at $119/month. Evertune costs $3,000/month. Profound and Writesonic GEO use custom enterprise pricing. The gap between entry-level and enterprise is 60x or more.

The first M&A deal happened. HubSpot acquired XFunnel in October 2025 and launched HubSpot AEO in April 2026. Basic AI visibility monitoring is now a bundled feature inside Marketing Hub, free for Pro and Enterprise subscribers. That changes the calculus for every standalone tool in the space.

The AEO Market Map: Five Categories

After tracking this space for over a year, we see the tools falling into five functional groups. Some tools span multiple categories, but each has a primary focus.

1. AI Visibility Monitoring

The biggest category by tool count. These platforms track how your brand shows up (or doesn't) across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and other AI engines. They measure share of voice, sentiment, citation frequency, and competitive positioning.

Tools: Evertune, Peec, AthenaHQ, PromptWatch, OmniSEO, AI Monitor, Vaylis, Otterly

This is where most teams start. The pitch is simple: you can't optimize what you can't measure. Evertune leads on depth and integrations (more on that below). Peec and AthenaHQ compete on ease of setup. PromptWatch (5,700+ brands) and Otterly compete on price.

For a deeper look at tools in this space, see our guide on AI visibility tracking tools and how to track brand mentions in AI search.

2. AEO Infrastructure and Analytics

End-to-end platforms that go beyond monitoring. These tools handle bot detection (identifying when AI crawlers visit your site), schema governance, CRM integration, and workflow automation. They're built for teams that need AEO wired into their existing marketing stack.

Tools: Profound, XFunnel/HubSpot AEO, Gauge

Profound is the most heavily funded player here at $20M. Their "Agent Analytics" product tracks LLM referral traffic at the server level, something most analytics tools miss entirely. Read our guide on Profound Agent Analytics for the technical details.

HubSpot AEO (formerly XFunnel) brought the category's first real distribution play. Every HubSpot Pro subscriber now has access to basic AI visibility data. That's millions of potential users who didn't have to make a separate buying decision.

3. Content Optimization for AI

These tools focus on the other side of AEO: making your content more likely to get cited by AI models. They analyze content structure, test prompts, and suggest changes to improve citation potential.

Tools: Writesonic GEO, Contently AI Studio, RankScale

Writesonic GEO takes the broadest approach, combining content optimization with visibility monitoring in one platform. RankScale has a focused testing methodology. Contently AI Studio brings AEO into an established content marketing workflow.

4. Accuracy and Hallucination Monitoring

A specialized but important niche. When AI engines say wrong things about your brand, you need to know immediately. This matters most in regulated industries like finance and healthcare, where inaccurate AI-generated answers create real liability.

Tools: Scrunch

Scrunch focuses specifically on hallucination detection and accuracy monitoring. Their $4M seed round targets this narrow but critical use case. For background on why this matters, see our guide on AI sentiment analysis for brands.

5. SEO-to-AEO Bridge

Traditional SEO platforms adding AEO features to their existing products. These aren't purpose-built for AEO, but they bring the advantage of existing user bases and data infrastructure.

Tools: Semrush AEO, SerpApi

Semrush added an AEO dashboard to its platform, starting at $119/month. SerpApi takes a different approach as a developer API for programmatic access to AI Overview data. Both serve teams that want AEO data alongside their existing SEO workflows.

Three Events That Defined the Past Year

HubSpot Buys XFunnel

The first acquisition in the AEO space happened in October 2025, when HubSpot bought XFunnel. Six months later, they launched HubSpot AEO as a bundled feature in Marketing Hub.

The signal this sends: basic AI visibility monitoring is table stakes. It's becoming a checkbox feature, not a standalone product. Standalone AEO tools need to offer something HubSpot can't, whether that's deeper analytics, broader platform coverage, or specialized capabilities like hallucination detection.

Evertune Wires Into the Affiliate Stack

In December 2025, impact.com announced a strategic partnership and investment in Evertune. Weeks later, PartnerStack launched its own Evertune integration. For the first time, AEO data connected directly to affiliate revenue.

This matters because it gives AEO a business case beyond "brand awareness." When you can show that AI citations from specific publishers drive actual revenue through affiliate channels, the ROI conversation gets a lot easier. Read more in our piece on how affiliates will get paid in agentic commerce.

AI Overviews Become a Distinct Channel

Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 47-60% of tracked search queries, depending on whose data you trust. BrightEdge reported 48% in March 2026, up 58% year-over-year. Advanced Web Ranking puts the number above 60% as of April 2026. Either way, the growth has been dramatic.

This created a tracking requirement that's distinct from LLM monitoring. Showing up in ChatGPT is one thing. Showing up in the AI Overview box at the top of a Google search results page is a different problem, with different optimization strategies. Tools like SerpApi, Semrush AEO, and RankScale specifically address this channel.

We cover this in detail in our AI Overview tracking guide. For the full data breakdown, read Google AI Overviews Are Eating Your Traffic.

What We're Watching for H2 2026

The llms.txt standard. A growing number of sites are publishing llms.txt files to help AI crawlers understand their content. It's early, but if adoption picks up, it could become the robots.txt of the AI era. We use it on this site and recommend it as a best practice.

Citation-to-revenue attribution. The Impact.com and PartnerStack integrations with Evertune are just the beginning. Expect more partnership platforms to build AEO data into their dashboards. The question is whether "Cost Per Citation" becomes a real pricing model or stays theoretical.

Agentic commerce. AI agents that don't just recommend products but actually buy them. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol is laying the groundwork. If agents become the buyers, the entire affiliate model needs rethinking, and AEO tools become the measurement layer for a new kind of influence.

More acquisitions. HubSpot won't be the last buyer. Salesforce, Adobe, and Semrush all have the resources and the strategic motivation. The AEO tools with the strongest integrations and cleanest data will be the most attractive targets.

The "AI SEO" label creep. Some traditional SEO platforms are relabeling basic features as "AEO" without building purpose-built functionality. Buyers should look past the marketing. Ask whether the tool actually monitors AI engines directly or just tracks traditional search with an AI spin on the dashboard.

How to Use This Market Map

If you're trying to pick a tool, here's a quick framework:

Enterprise brands with budget and a dedicated team: Look at Evertune, Profound, or Writesonic GEO. These offer the deepest analytics and best integrations. See our enterprise AEO tools page.

Startups and SMBs watching their spend: Start with Otterly, Vaylis, PromptWatch, or Gauge. You don't need $3K/month to start measuring AI visibility. See our startup AEO tools and budget-friendly options.

Already on HubSpot? Try HubSpot AEO first. It's included with your Pro or Enterprise subscription. If you outgrow it, you'll know what features you actually need from a standalone tool.

Need hallucination monitoring specifically? Scrunch is the specialist here, especially for finance and healthcare brands.

Building custom integrations? SerpApi gives you programmatic access to AI Overview data.

Where the Market Goes From Here

The AEO market has shifted from "do I need this?" to "which tool do I pick?" That's a healthy sign for the category, and it's exactly why this site exists.

We'll keep updating this market map as the space evolves. In the meantime, check our full tool comparison for detailed reviews, or browse the guide library if you're still getting up to speed on what AEO actually is.
